How to Improve Your Posture

Having the right posture is an important part of your day to day life. Not only can having bad posture give you a slouchy, even unkempt, look, it can also cause pain in your back, neck, and legs. If you're looking for how to improve your posture, then you're making a good decision. You're also in luck:  It isn't as difficult as you'd think it would be! All it takes are a few adjustments.

Stand Up Straight


This is perhaps the biggest thing you could do to improve your posture. Standing up straight not only makes you look better, it makes you look taller, as well. It will also stop the backaches that slouching all of the time can cause. To stand up as as straight as possible, pull your shoulders back and shift your lower back forward. You should be aiming to have your spine completely straight, and your head directly above your hips.

Place Your Feet Correctly


People with bad standing posture tend to stand one of two ways:  With their feet flush together or, more commonly, with their feet splayed wide apart. Neither are correct. Instead, for the best posture, as well as the best balance, you should stand so that your feet are a little less than shoulder width apart. It allows you to have good balance, but not be taking up too much space with your legs.

Keep Your Weight In the Right Place


A lot of people seem to be at a loss on how to carry their weight. They normally carry it either too far back, or so far forward that it ends up in their toes. This leads to foot pain, leg fatigue, and a great deal of discomfort, along with it being bad posture. Instead, your weight should be positioned on the balls of your feet. Try to keep it evenly distributed for the best comfort.

Square Your Shoulders


There is no better way to cause yourself upper back pain than slouching your shoulders all day. There is also no better way to look slouchy, either. If you're tired of the shoulder and back pain, or if you're tired of looking slouchy, then it's time to step up your posture! You need to square your shoulders, for the best view. To do this, draw your shoulders back until they're situated above your rib cage.

Lift Your Head


None of this will make any difference if you don't lift your head. Lifting your head and holding it high gives you a look of someone who cares about their appearance, as well as stopping your neck aching from hanging down all day. Pull your head back, and lift your chin. Your head should be over your hips. Then lift your chin; it shouldn't be pointed at your chest. Instead, it should be pointed outwards.
